Training Courses
|
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) offers three Sage-ST ä training classes: Beginning Sage-ST , Advanced Sage-ST , and Sage-ST Windows. These courses are highly specialized and are taught by software engineers experienced in Ada and Sage-ST development.
Topics covered in the Beginning Sage-ST class include THOR, GRAPL, Sage, Display, SageLib, Reports, Rebuild, CheckLib, HelpLib, and an overview of optimizing techniques. Participants should be proficient in Ada or some other high-level language (e.g. Pascal, Modula-2, C).
Topics covered in the Advanced Sage-ST class include process procedures, BufIO, variable-length data, Files, Cache, SortMrg, MultSage, and multiple-executable techniques. Participants MUST be proficient in Ada and have successfully completed the Beginning Sage-ST course or have equivalent experience. Ideally, participants will begin working on a project immediately after taking the beginning class and take the advanced class from one to three months afterwards. This gives participants a chance to practice what they learned before moving on to more difficult areas.
Topics covered in the Sage-ST Windows class include the use of THOR to create graphical screens, menus, dialogs, and messages for Windows applications. The course covers the SAGE custom controls and the Windows related Ada Packages. Participants should have completed the Beginning Sage-ST course or equivalent. Knowledge of object-oriented programming is helpful but not required.
Any of these classes can be tailored to meet the particular needs of the participants, although highly customized classes may incur some additional costs. All classes are taught at the sponsor's site.
Cost
We now have a single pricing structure for DOS and windows-based classes except those that are highly customized. The stated price for a class includes the following:
· Transportation for the instructor(s) from Idaho Falls, Idaho, to the training site;
· Food and lodging costs for the instructor(s) at the training site. These are based on the standard government rates;
· A rental car for the instructor(s);
· Preparation time and actual in-class time for the instructor(s);
· Sage-ST installation diskettes; and,
· Coordination and administration of the Sage-ST training program.
For a class size of less than or equal to eleven students, base cost is $10,000 for all classes. For more than eleven but less than or equal to twenty students, the base cost for the classes is $18,200 (two instructors rather than one). For classes held outside the continental U.S., a percentage will be added based on rates in the target country. For classes requested by non-U.S. government entities, DOE includes an added factor that will increase the cost. For classes taught in a UNIX environment, highly customized classes, or classes requested by a non-U.S. government entity, please call to discuss costs.
If two or more government agencies wish to sponsor one class, MIPR's can be sent by each participating agency individually for its share of the class. Costs will be shared based on the number of students attending.
Attendance
We recommend that there be no more than twenty people per class and no fewer than six. If you have eleven or fewer persons requiring training, we will send only one instructor.
Audio-Visual Equipment Requirements
The instructors will require an overhead transparency projector, a white board, and
markers for the white board. A large screen color monitor is useful but not
essential.
Classroom Facility Required
A special classroom setup is not necessary but a suitable environment for learning
and teaching must be provided including or for example: no smoking, few
distractions, suitable temperature control, proper restroom facilities, etc.
Hardware and Software
Because much of the class is devoted to lab work, hardware and an Ada compiler that supports Sage-ST must be provided. Participants must have editors with which they are familiar loaded onto the computers they will use. We recommend that there be no more than two participants per computer.
Having a printer(s) available is helpful and enhances the presentation of several of the lessons. A network is very helpful, especially for the advanced class.
Course Materials
Instructors will provide a set of Sage-ST installation diskettes for the sponsoring organization and various articles and handouts. Students should have extra diskettes to make copies of their work for future reference.
Additional
It is helpful if the host can recommend one or two hotels that are located near the class site and are within the government rates. Another helpful item is a map or written directions from the airport to the hotel and from there to the class site. If parking permits, building passes, or other security or registration of vehicles, personnel, or equipment is needed for your facility, these MUST be taken care of before the instructors' arrival.
Requesting a Class
To request an on-site class, call the Sage-ST help line at (208) 526-0656 to arrange a date and verify the cost.
Government Agencies
Send a letter requesting training (see sample letter of request) along with a
Military Interdepartmental Purchase Request (MIPR) to the Department of Energy
(DOE). The DOE will respond with a formal acceptance. Requests and MIPR's must be
received by DOE at least fifteen working days prior to the start of the class.
No work (class preparation, printing of manuals, etc.) can be done until
the Department of Energy has received the funds.
MIPRs (DD-Form
448) must be sent to Mr. Alden Wynn at the address listed below. The MIPRs must
reference the Sage-ST training Project #91707. A NAVCOMPT order or a project order
are also acceptable for transferring funds.
Under no circumstances should a
government agency send cash or a check.
Non-government Entities
Following agreement on a date and costs, Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) will send your purchasing department a contract and bill. The contract and a check for the specified amount must be received by BEA at least twelve working days prior to the start of the class. No work (class preparation, printing of manuals, etc.) can be done until the check and contract have been received by BEA.
Other Information
If a class will be held outside the continental U.S., DOE regulations require that we register our intentions at least fifty days in advance of leaving. This means that funds must be received at least fifty days in advance of leaving. If funds have not been received by the specified date the class shall be canceled.
